Dialogue<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Mrs Davis:<\/em><\/strong> Pride and Prejudice <\/em>was published <\/em><\/strong>in 1813 and it was completely <\/em>ahead of its time<\/em><\/strong>!<\/em>
\nMr Miller<\/em><\/strong>: Ugh, this is so boring.<\/em>
\nMrs Davis:<\/em><\/strong> Mr Miller, is there anything you would like to share with your <\/em>classmates<\/em><\/strong>?<\/em>
\nMr Miller:<\/em><\/strong> Oh, no! Absolutely not. I\u2019m sorry, Mrs Davis! I was just saying how much I love your classes.<\/em>
\nMrs Davis: I won\u2019t fall for this<\/em><\/strong> one. Please, sit up straight. Do you even have your book with you?<\/em>

Expressions<\/h4>\n

1. To be ahead of one\u2019s time<\/strong><\/p>\n

When something or someone is too modern for its time. For example, a book published, during a conservative and sexist period in time, in which a female character is strong and independent.<\/p>\n

Pride and Prejudice was so ahead of its time.
\n<\/strong>People didn\u2019t understand their style because they were ahead of their time.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2. To fall for something<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is an informal way of saying you believe in something.<\/p>\n

Peter always tells lies\u2026 But this time I won\u2019t fall <\/strong>for it.<\/p>\n

She told me this was the right address, and I fell <\/strong>for it!<\/p>\n

Passive voice<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Verb to be + past participle<\/strong><\/p>\n

Passive voice is when the subject doesn\u2019t do <\/em>the action, it receives <\/em>it. It is very common in the English language! It might indicate that whoever did the action is either unknown, too obvious or not important.<\/p>\n

This book was published in 1813.<\/strong>
\n> Who published the book is not the most important thing.<\/p>\n

She was arrested for stealing.<\/strong>
\n> Who arrested her was obviously the police, but the focus is on her.<\/p>\n

I am treated well at work.<\/strong>
\n> By my colleagues, of course, but the focus is on me.<\/p>\n

The window was broken.<\/strong>
\n> We might not know who did it.<\/p>\n
