How to respond to “what’s up”
Answering such a simple question as “what’s up?” can be pretty confusing to someone who doesn’t speak English as a first language.
I commonly hear speakers of other languages responding to it with “I’m fine” or “I’m good”, but those wouldn’t be the best answers, and I’ll tell you why.
The meaning of “what’s up?”
“What’s up?” actually means “what’s going on with you?”, which is different from asking “how are you?”. So the best answer would be to tell the person what you’ve been doing lately.
Let’s check out some examples:
Not much, I’m just making some coffee.
Not much, I’m just looking at funny memes instead of working.
Not much, I’m just running away from a T. rex.
How to return the question to the other person
Now that you’ve learned how to respond to “what’s up?”, don’t forget to return the question to the other person by saying:
And you?
What’s up with you?
