Welcome to another episode of Walk’n’Talk! It’s time for a getaway. Our characters are going camping this time and you can get ready with them! Enjoy this quick lesson with Scott, teacher from Fluency Academy!

The Dialogue:

Tony: Oh no, there’s a tear in my tent!
Priya: Don’t worry, I have a spare one you can borrow.
Tony: Ok, thanks! I can’t wait until we get there!
Priya: I know, me too! Jack is already there, setting up a campfire.
Tony: That means we can have s’mores tonight!
Priya: Yes! And it’ll be warm, so we can sleep in our sleeping bags under the stars!

Vocabulary Expansion:

A spare one

“Spare” is a word that specifically describes an extra, one extra object, one that you won’t necessarily use on that occasion. The character here brought a tent for herself and an extra one too, so she brought a “spare”. Check out these examples:

  • Do you have a spare jacket? I let mine in the car.
  • We need a spare tire, ours is gone.
  • I forgot to bring a spare pencil for the test.

Setting up a campfire.

When you need to get things in order before an event or activity, you can express that idea with the collocation “set up” or just “set”, in some cases. If you need to organize the table for dinner, for example, you need to “set the table” and here in the dialogue, Jack was getting the fire ready, he was “setting up a campfire”. Let’s take a look at some more examples:

  • I need to set up our new computer tonight.
  • Sheryl is going to set up our tent this time.
  • We are setting up our electricity at the new house.

So we can sleep on our sleeping bags

To connect the cause to a consequence in sentences, it’s common to use the word “so”! It fits in very well in most cases, as we saw in this dialogue. Here are some examples:

  • The food is ready so go wash your hands.
  • I have a cat so I can’t have that kind of plant at home.
  • It’s raining today so we’re going to stay home.

We hope this content was helpful and that you enjoyed the episode! Don’t forget that you can listen to it as many times as you want and that the more you practice, the more confident you will feel. See you next time!
