The Dialogue‍

A: What kind of music do you like to listen to?
B: I like to listen to all different kinds of music.
A: Like what, for instance?
B: I like Rock and Pop music.
A: Oh nice, me too. My favorite artist is Beyoncé!
B: Oh, yeah, she’s awesome!

‍Vocabulary Expansion

‍What kind of
These words can be the start of a conversation about anything, “what kind of ___ do you like?” is the structure you can use to ask about music, movies, sports, food and basically everything. Here are some examples:

What kind of music do you like to listen to?
What kind of food do you like?
What kind of sports do you play?
What kind of books do you like?
What kind of food do you like to cook?

Listen to

“Listen” is a verb that is followed by “to”! That is a very important detail to remember, but it is easy to forget, so let’s look at some examples:

I like to listen to all different kinds of music.
I’m listening to a podcast now.
You have to listen to your mother.
Victoria listens to music every day.
I like to listen to rock music.

Favorite artist

In English, the characteristic needs to come before the object! In the dialogue they said “different kinds” and “favorite artist”, “different” is describing “kinds” and “favorite” is describing “artist”. Check out some more examples:

My favorite artist is Beyoncé!
The green pencil is broken.
I have a small car.
We watched a sad movie.
I read an amazing book.
