Walk ‘n’ Talk Essentials #07 – Hey, don’t get lost! That’s how you ask for directions!

Welcome to another episode of Walk ‘n’ Talk! Do you know where the museum is? Let’s learn how to talk about directions and some common words that will help you find your way if you get lost. Enjoy this lesson by Kally, teacher from Fluency Academy!

‍The Dialogue:‍

A: Hello, good afternoon. Could you help me?
B: Yes, sure.
A: I would like to go to the Royal Museum.
B: It’s about two blocks from here. Go along the street until you see the traffic lights. The museum is right on the corner.
A: Thank you so much!
B: No problem!

‍Vocabulary Expansion:‍‍

Could you
Our character needs help, and they are very nice and polite! Words like “could” and “would” make sentences sound more polite, so starting a request with “could” is quite nice. Starting a sentence with “I would like” has the same effect, it sound very polite. Let’s take a look at some examples:

Could you help me?
I would like two coffees, please.
Could you wait a moment, please?
I would like a chocolate muffin, please.
Could you take a picture of us?

The word “from” describes a point of origin, so it is commonly used to describe distances, as we saw here in the dialogue. Here are some extra examples:

It’s about two blocks from here.
The pharmacy is one mile away from my house.
My school is one block from the mall.
My dad works five miles from there.
She is ten feet away from me.

Go along
This means to stay on the same street, to continue going in a certain direction. There are some synonyms, so let’s check them out:

Go along the street.
Go ahead until you see the gas station.
Keep going and turn left when you see the river.
Go straight for two blocks.
Go straight ahead until the end of the road.
