Welcome to another episode of Walk ‘n’ Talk! Today we are talking all about the weather in English. Talking about the weather can be an easy way to start a conversation, even with strangers. Knowing some phrases in English will help you get through “small talk” much more easily. Have fun with this lesson by Adam, teacher from Fluency Academy!

The Dialogue:

A: It’s a nice day today. Isn’t it?
B: Yes, it is.
A: I think it may rain soon.
B: Do you think? It’s warm and sunny!
A: Exactly! It always rains when it’s warm and sunny!
B: True that!

Expand your Vocabulary:

Isn’t it?
As you already know, “isn’t” is a contraction of “is + not”. The “isn’t it?” construction means the same thing as “right?” or “isn’t that correct?”. You use it when you want your conversation partner to agree with a positive statement you make. You can also use it with different person pronouns like “she”, “he”, “they”, etc. Look at some examples:

It’s raining outside, isn’t it?
Samantha is very professional, isn’t she?
They are working hard, aren’t they?

Rain
“Rain” is water that falls from the clouds in small drops. The word can be used both as a noun or as a verb. You can also say “light rain” when the rain is light and “heavy rain” when the rain is falling in large drops and with a lot of force. Here are some examples:

I left my bicycle out in the rain.
It rained and rained and didn’t stop for days.
Is it raining?

Warm
Something that is “warm” has some heat but not enough to be “hot”. Let’s say that warm weather means temperatures around 25°C. Hot weather is when temperatures are around 35°C or more. You can use “warm” to talk about the weather and temperature and also to talk about clothes. Check out some examples:

It was a really nice warm day for April.
We sat by the fire to stay warm.
That coat looks nice and warm.

So, what’s the weather like today? We hope you enjoyed learning about this topic! By knowing how to describe the weather in English, you really are opening doors to many conversations. Don’t forget that you can listen to it as many times as you want and that the more you practice, the more confident you will feel. Byeee!
