Pois é gente, estamos aqui de novo falando dessa figura que é o Elon Musk. Depois de toda aquela conversa ele finalmente se tornou o novo proprietário do Twitter e, adivinha? Já tá dando o que falar. Vem comigo para gente ficar por dentro desse assunto.
After all that happened, Elon Musk finally became the official owner of Twitter on the 29th of October, and the first two weeks quickly became a nightmare for the 7.5000 employees of the company.
After giving little to no notice, Elon fired nearly half of all employees. The fired workers were suddenly cut off from the company’s work systems even before knowing about their layoffs and soon started tweeting about their experiences.
Many of them were part of the safety and trust teams, and even the curation team, which raised worries about what kind of content would now be free to circle the platform. Even the human rights team was cut from the company and advertisers quickly started to pull away due to this fear of misinformation and lack of security.
Employees who remain say it won’t take long for critical structures to start falling apart.
A few days later Musk proposed that users pay 8 dollars per month to become or to remain verified, claiming that he “had no choice” since the company was losing 4 million dollars a day. This, once again, raised concerns about identity theft and the possibility of fraud.
Civil society leaders stated “You’re really saying that the free speech of people who pay is more important than the free speech of people who can’t,” and another teased saying “I’m laughing at a billionaire trying to sell people the idea that ‘free speech’ is actually an $8/mo subscription plan,”.
Você percebeu que a gente usou aqui muitas palavras diferentes para falar sobre “ser demitido”? Começando pelos verbos, que foram: to fire, to lay off e to cut off. A primeira frase na notícia foi:
Era só o que faltava, agora qualquer pessoa pode ser verificada no Twitter, contanto que tenha dinheiro? Eu não sei como nem onde isso vai fazer sentido mas pensando bem, será tem alguma coisa no Elon Musk que faz sentido? Bom, um dia quem sabe a gente encontre mas enquanto isso vamos para a nossa primeira dica de hoje!
Elon fired nearly half of all employees.
Que podemos traduzir como “O Elon demitiu quase metade dos funcionários.” O verbo “fire” quer dizer simplesmente “demitir”. Mas a frase poderia ser também:
Elon laid off nearly half of all employees.
E teria o mesmo sentido, e também:
Elon cut off nearly half of all employees.
Mas é importante saber que “cut off” é um daqueles phrasal verbs que podem ter vários sentidos diferentes, aqui nesse contexto da notícia fica claro que o sentido é de “demitir”, mas em outras situações ele pode significar “cortar contato” com alguém, tipo, parar totalmente de falar com aquela pessoa, lembra a música “somebody that I used to know?” então! Lá ele diz
You didn’t have to cut me off.
Que tem o sentido de “você não precisava ter me cortado/você não precisava ter sumido da minha vida”. Mas o importante é saber que to fire, to lay off e to cut off são todas formas de falar “demitir”. E ainda existem outras, mas vamos deixar pra outro episódio!
Lembra que na semana passada eu comentei que nada é mais horrível do que você sair para de divertir e acabar envolvido em uma tragédia? Infelizmente foi exatamente isso que aconteceu, de novo, nessa notícia. Vamo lá:
37-year-old Dennis Marin, a Brazilian man who lived a life without borders, shared his life on Instagram for 4 years as he traveled the world along with his adorable cat Lince in his Kombi.
A large block of ice sadly crushed Dennis as he was walking into a cave in Ushuaia, Argentina, on Wednesday. The cave, known as Jimbo Cave, is accessible only by a nine-kilometer walk within Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego National Park.
The Brazilian tourist and several others walked by the sign reading “Alert: Do Not Enter” as they entered the cave. Moments later, a block of ice fell from the ceiling and landed on Dennis. Another tourist, standing farther from the entrance, captured the event on video. Different outlets have variously reported the total number of tourists in the group as six or seven.
The victim’s family is now fighting to get enough funds for the body to be transported back to Brazil, along with his cat and his van. Thankfully, Lince was asleep in the Kombi when the tragedy happened, and has been living with Dennis’ friends, who took her in since the accident.
Meus sentimentos à família, os amigos e a gata de estimação do Dennis! Que notícia triste, mas vamos torcendo aqui para que a Lince tenha uma vida boa mesmo depois dessa tragédia, né? E que a família consiga todo o dinheiro que precisa. Agora tá na hora da segunda dica de hoje.
Bem no final da notícia, o que aconteceu com a Lince? Olha só essa frase:
Dennis’ friends took Lince in after the accident.
O que será que significa esse “to take in”? Esse é um phrasal verb com um sentido bem legal de “acolher” alguém que precisa de cuidados, pode ter tanto o sentido emocional de acolher alguém, quanto o sentido físico, de dar abrigo e comida para quem precisa. No caso da notícia, quem precisou foi a gata Lince. Vamos ver outros exemplos:
Nina took me in when my parents were sick.
A Nina me acolheu quando meus pais estavam doentes.
I took in two abandoned puppies this weekend.
Eu abriguei dois cachorrinhos abandonados esse final de semana.
Resumindo: take in = abrigar, acolher
Quem aí lembra de quando Backstreet Boys fazia o maior sucesso? Você que já fez parte dessa onde ou conhece alguém que fez, já compartilha esse episódio.
Bom, quem for muito jovem não vai lembrar e não vai saber bem de quem estamos falando aqui na nossa última notícia, que também é muito triste. Mas mesmo assim, vem ouvir:
Aaron Carter, rapper, singer, and former child pop singer has died, at just 34 years of age. Aaron was the younger brother of Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter and was also known for his roles on TV such as “Lizzie McGuire” on Disney Channel.
The details of his death were not fully revealed apart from the fact he was found in his bathtub, and the topic of his mental health quickly came up.
Media outlets remembered the struggles he said shared publicly in the past, including his battle with several mental health issues, multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia, acute anxiety, and manic depression.
His brother Nick, a member of the American boy band, wrote online: “I will miss my brother more than anyone will ever know.”
His post acknowledged that their brotherhood had not been stress-free, which culminated in the elder Carter filing a restraining order against Aaron in 2019. During the band’s last concert, Nick was comforted by his bandmates, before the group went on to dedicate a performance of their song Breathe to their former touring companion.
Eu sinto muito! Desejando aqui muita força pra família. E desculpa por terminar com uma notícia tão trieste gente. Vamos todos ouvir Backstreet Boys no final do episódio para sentir a nostalgia. E vamos logo para a nossa última dica de hoje.
Aqui não é bem uma expressão que vamos ver, nem uma dica de vocabulário. Vamos falar da estrutura da última frase da notícia, onde chamamos o Aaron de “former touring companion”, ou seja, de “antigo parceiro de turnês”.
O ponto aqui é que antes da palavra “companion”, você pode usar qualquer verbo na forma com ING para descrever do que aquela pessoa é parceira. Como assim?
Se eu saio para correr com a minha esposa, eu posso dizer que:
My wife is my running companion.
A minha esposa é minha parceira de corrida.
Posso usar também a palavra partner:
My brother is my fishing partner.
Meu irmão é meu parceiro de pesca.
Até mesmo a palavra “buddy” pode ser usada nesse contexto:
Jack is my reading buddy.
O Jack é meu parceiro de leitura.
Mas fique atento porque algumas atividades não são tão usadas na forma com ING, como o verbo study e o verbo work out, por exemplo. Eu diria:
Jessie is my study partner.
A Jessie é minha parceira de estudos.
A verdade é que podemos usar atividades com ING antes de muitas palavras pra descrever a finalidade delas, tenta perceber isso nos nossos próximos episódios.
Because, you know, these episodes are pretty good listening exercises, aren’t they?
