Dialogue
Angela: These finals are killing me. Just can’t wait to start enjoying summer break!
Hailey: Right? I’m already making some plans for us.
Angela: Tell me all about it. Where will we be off to?
Hailey: I was thinking about spending some days in California. We can enjoy the beach and the nightlife.
Angela: You nailed it, girl! I sure need to take a tan and to meet new people too.
Hailey: Well, we’d better stop daydreaming and start studying, eh?
Angela: It’s true. We won’t be able to travel if we fail the finals…
Hailey: Oh, don’t you dare say such a thing!
New expressions and Vocabulary!
– Make plans
Even though we usually describe the uses of “make” as more related to manual things and to the idea of creating things, that is not always true. Among the many possible uses of “make”, we have some more abstract concepts as well, such as plans and decisions. These verb + noun combinations are not changeable:
Are you ready to make a decision about your professional life?
Hillary makes a difference in the life of many refugees.
We finally made a choice, so we need to speak to Jim.
Everyone makes mistakes, don’t worry about it.
I’m sure they haven’t made other plans, so let’s invite them.
– To be off to
Here we have another very common expression in daily conversation! When you are “off to somewhere” it means you are on your way there. Check out some possible sentences:
Where are you off to? You’ve just arrived.
Janice and Joe are off to the movies.
My dad is off to bed, so be quiet.
– Get a tan
Among its several uses, “get” is also related to many concepts of procedures or bodily changes! As you saw in the dialogue, we have the collocation “get a tan”, but we also use “get” to talk about tattoos, piercings, surgeries, and so on. Have a look at some examples:
Gina got a tan during her trip to Bali.
I’m going to get a tattoo next week.
George wants to get his ear pierced this month.
I’m thinking of getting my hair cut shorter.
Cassie is going to get her hair dyed pink today.
Remember that you can listen to this episode as many times as you wish! You can also read along, and enjoy this extra content. That way, you’ll be able to understand these new structures and use them in conversations in the future. Keep in mind that the more daily contact you have with the English language, the better you’ll get, so make sure you’re here for our next episode!
See you next time!
